  1. We all called it, but SFCGator called it best.

    1. Yup! 😁

  2. Somebody like him always has a few aces up his sleeve.

    1. There are probably so many extra aces he needs extra sleeves.

  3. So Torel violates that one concept which so often crops up regarding time travel, going back to kill Hitler or whatever enemy as a baby. Torel’s a real monster. Monsters…real monsters don’t look like Frankenstein’s monster or werewolves, they look like your neighbor or a nice white haired old guy in a lab smock.

  4. I wonder if the time bureau has fail safes for disappearances of their agents on such missions.

Or failsafes for a time when they find out a curater went bad.

    1. How do you tell if an agent has disappeared if, in your reality (timeline), they never existed as agents because they died twenty years before they could apply for the job? IIRC there is about a 2 hour window to find and correct the cause of a tremor before the effects of a tremor become permanent. The bureau would need to have another person doing a duplicate of Torel’s job, monitoring and correcting time tremors, and no such fail safe/backup has been mentioned. I wouldn’t be surprised if Torel manipulated the time bureau’s history in order to ensure that no such duplicate job were even thought about, let alone implemented.

The Tirinites are the fail safe, but they developed at the edges of the multiverse, outside the time bureau’s (Torel’s) focus. It has taken them many iterations of time (literally forever) to become numerous and influential enough to counteract Torel.

Thank you for creating and sharing Merceneiress!

      1. Thank you for your kind words!

    2. To paraphrase a certain undead Judge: “You can not save, they who did not exist.”

    3. Decades ago there was a kids’ TV show featuring the Harlem Globetrotters doing schtick. One routine would lead to, “I knew that you knew that I knew that you knew that I knew you were gonna do that, so I put the blanks back in that gun.” (Yeah, 80’s)
When two adversaries can time travel, where does the ever-earlier exchange of preemptive takedowns end… er, begin?
