Silly Beau, assuming the enemy will live long enough to be get into melee.
Lurker314 (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 3:03 am
@Ganurath: Yep. Rule #1 of hand to hand. If you're in hand to hand, you've already failed. Probably more than once.
Guesticus (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 6:17 am
Happy Mirby in panel three, is Scary Mirby!
One problem there Mirby dear: they are fire-resistant!!

Waited until new page to comment on the invotive: really hoping that the chains and spikes are not metal, or someone will get a nasty surprise!!
E Hines (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 7:11 am
Magic doesn't work here. And they need iron, not steel. And especially not serovium.
Even if the fire and not-iron do work, the charred bits and pieces will continue to fight. And swarm, like the crispy critters(R) they've become.

@E Hines: if magic didn't work, then Mirby wouldn't have been able to change Dabs' clothes, or produce the Burning Hands
Don't know what they are fighting, but it ain't elves
E Hines (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 9:26 am
@Guesticus: Near Field Effect only.
Eric Hines
Guesticus (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 1:24 pm
@E Hines: that's still magic in use, and that last panel shows it to be more than just Near Field Effect
E Hines (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 2:10 pm
@Guesticus: NFE isn't, of necessity, magic. And that last panel doesn't show anything other than that the Merged Lady in the Mirror has launched.
Eric Hines
Guesticus (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 3:41 pm
@E Hines: has launched what? A big-ass fireball? Created by the not-magic NFE
If she can create fire without the means of fuel or flammable materials, sure sounds like magic to me

We still don't know what that other weapon was, the one not selected
E Hines (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 3:57 pm
@Guesticus: Whatever the one not selected might be, it's not a shorter edged weapon in anyone's hands.
As someone once said, tech sufficiently advanced looks like magic. Like NFE.

Guesticus (Guest) January 6th, 2018, 4:20 am
@E Hines: except, she is not wearing anything to explain the production of the flames, nor Dabs' change in outfit (unless you believe she had a spare outfit tucked away somewhere, including fancy boots)

@Ganurath; what is wrong with her stance? Other than not being 'Western'?
E Hines (Guest) January 6th, 2018, 7:41 am
@Guesticus: 1) she doesn't have a second, shorter blade in her other hand--oh, wait....
2) the blade she has is much too big for her
3) the sideways stance limits her mobility, especially in a target rich environment
4) her weight on her back foot cedes the initiative to her attackers
5) the blade held high, vertical, and to one side slows her ability either to parry or to strike
6) the apparently locked knee in her forward leg is begging to be ruined by a foot strike
That'll do for starters. It's like the lady was taught in a dojo and not in the world.
Still, it's the story, which is outstanding, that matters, not these trivial details about which we've been quibbling and speculating.
Eric Hines
Guesticus (Guest) January 6th, 2018, 2:16 pm
@E Hines: again, those points are all fine, if she was in a 'Western' stance
The left leg would provide momentum to push off from, the right leg is straight, no indicator that it is 'locked'

@Kitsap Charles: Florence (from 'Freefall') has a great quote, wrote it down somewhere but not sure where it is now :(
E Hines (Guest) January 6th, 2018, 3:38 pm
@Guesticus: Got nothing to do with Western stances or Eastern or upside down. Has everything to do with winning a fight for survival, especially in the coming target rich environment.
Eric Hines
Guesticus (Guest) January 6th, 2018, 7:15 pm
@E Hines: you have never actually seen a proper sword fight, outside of HolyWeird, or, horrors, one of them 'RenFair' crapstick shows

Her stance is just as acceptable as Tirin's and Diddly's, she is in the 'ready' stance
E Hines (Guest) January 6th, 2018, 10:33 pm
@Guesticus: Personal foolishness in lieu of coherent argument. Amusing.
Have a nice day.
Eric Hines
Guesticus (Guest) January 7th, 2018, 12:30 pm
@E Hines: what? All your 'arguments' have no grounds in reality
Kitsap Charles January 6th, 2018, 1:25 pm
@E Hines: Arthur C. Clarke's third law: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

And the obvious corollary, "Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced."
robnot (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 9:15 am
Mirby : "forget your knife kids..." "We're having a minion roast.!!"
E Hines (Guest) January 5th, 2018, 2:12 pm
I also notice (finally) that Beau didn't bring along, and so no one could select, both a long edged weapon and a short one. Both Samurai and certain French duelists would have chosen differently.

Upon looking at the strip again, I can't help but feel something horrific needs to be inflicted on Lord Tia. Did Dabney forget how to hold a sword?
Ganurath (Guest) January 7th, 2018, 4:06 pm
@Both of You: My problem was with how she was holding her sword, which involves her arms. Stance is legs. Specifically, the forearms pointing in almost exactly the opposite direction hinders her capacity to swing anywhere but straight vertically, and her body isn't positioned so that such a swing would hit the enemies in front of her.
Merceneiress January 7th, 2018, 4:55 pm
I appreciate everyone's comments! When I get back from vacation I am going to redo Dabney's stance. I'll likely use Chudan No Kamae. I realize from your comments that Dabney'a current pose is indeed more of a tv or movie stance. The pose was from a set of "samurai" poses I had in my Daz library but after your comments realized it wasn't the best pose...
Guesticus (Guest) January 7th, 2018, 7:09 pm
Her stance (which is the whole positioning, not just the legs) is not that far off from In No Kamae or Hasso No Kamae (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwQZtsVSOJM), the errors could be excused by how long ago she trained with Lord Tia (seriously doubt Salock would have allowed her access to anyone once sent to that place, let along a martial artist) and how good of a student she was

Her front leg should be turned, but being straight is okay as she would push off from the back leg. Having the legs the other way around (bent front, straight back) does not work!!
Merceneiress January 9th, 2018, 9:52 am
Yes, it probably has been a long time since she trained --- I've changed panel 6 and I think it is more in line with that...
Guesticus (Guest) January 9th, 2018, 12:28 pm
@Merceneiress: as said, personally felt the only thing that needed to be changed should have been the front foot, butt, if you, as the creator, felt the whole thing was 'wrong', then that's fine
This is one of the great things about web comics: almost immediate feedback (from both sides) and the ability to make changes if need be (sometimes with just the script {typos and awkward speech}, sometimes with scenes and poses) :D
Merceneiress January 10th, 2018, 10:37 am
@Guesticus: I agree. Love the feedback you guys give --- please keep doing that!!!
